Questions Common questions
The answers below cover starting therapy with Jess, fees and Medicare, sessions and privacy. Reception at either clinic looks after appointments, fees and rebates.
Getting started
Do I need a referral to see Jess?
No. You can contact either clinic directly, pay the clinic's fee and claim from your private health extras if your cover includes psychology. Alternatively, you can start with a referral under Medicare's Better Access program and claim a Medicare rebate for your sessions.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a clinical psychologist?
All psychologists in Australia are registered with the Psychology Board of Australia and trained to assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of concerns. A clinical psychologist, like Jess, has also completed an accredited postgraduate degree and a Board-approved registrar program in clinical psychology, and holds the Board's endorsement. This training centres on assessing, diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. For a session of the same length, Medicare pays a higher rebate with a clinical psychologist than with a registered psychologist.
Can Jess diagnose mental health conditions?
Yes. Where a diagnosis is helpful, Jess bases it on recognised diagnostic criteria and uses it to guide treatment. As a registrar, she provided psychological assessment and diagnostic clarification with the Acute Psychology Team at Canberra Health Services. You do not need a diagnosis to start therapy. Psychologists do not prescribe medication, so if medication might help, a GP or psychiatrist can advise.
Does Jess see children and teenagers?
Yes. Jess sees children from about six years old, teenagers and adults. Parents or carers of younger children are usually involved, particularly early on, so that Jess can understand the child's life at home and at school. Teenagers often spend more of the session on their own, and what is shared with parents or carers is agreed at the start.
What if Jess isn't the right fit for me?
Feeling comfortable with your psychologist matters, and research links a good working relationship with how much people gain from therapy. If something does not feel right, raise it with Jess, and she can adjust how sessions run. If another psychologist or service would suit you better, she can talk through the options with you.
Medicare and fees
Can I get a Medicare rebate?
Yes, with a referral under Medicare's Better Access program from your usual GP or MyMedicare practice (with a Mental Health Treatment Plan), or from a psychiatrist or paediatrician. Rebates apply to up to 10 individual sessions each calendar year, and the first referral covers up to six. Mind Your Health Centre in Rosanna can process the rebate on the day. The What to expect page has the full details.
Can I use my private health insurance?
Yes, if your extras cover includes psychology. Funds differ in what they pay, their yearly limits and waiting periods, so check with yours early. You cannot claim Medicare and private health insurance for the same session, though some people use each for different sessions.
How much do sessions cost?
Each clinic sets its own fees, so the cost can differ between Rosanna and Warrandyte. Reception at either clinic can tell you the current fee and the out-of-pocket cost after a Medicare rebate, and your health fund can tell you what it pays towards a session.
Sessions
What happens in the first session?
Jess starts the assessment by asking what brings you in, how it affects your life and about your background, and may use standardised questionnaires. She also explains confidentiality and answers your questions. From the assessment, you and Jess agree a treatment plan.
How long is a session?
Sessions usually run for about 50 minutes. Sessions with younger children are sometimes shorter, and reception at either clinic can confirm the length of an appointment with Jess.
How many sessions do people usually have?
It varies. Many people start weekly or fortnightly and space sessions out as things settle. A course of CBT is often six to twenty sessions, while schema therapy runs over many months. Jess reviews the treatment plan with you as therapy progresses, and you can change the frequency or take a break.
Can I have sessions by telehealth?
Yes, and you can combine online and in-person sessions. For many common concerns, research finds telehealth works about as well as in-person therapy. Medicare rebates apply as they do in person. A private room and headphones help keep sessions confidential.
What if I need to cancel or change an appointment?
Each clinic sets its own cancellation notice period and any late-change fee. Medicare rebates cannot be claimed for missed appointments or late-cancellation fees. Contact Mind Your Health Centre in Rosanna on (03) 9965 8903 or Mullum Road Clinic in Warrandyte on (03) 7042 3300 as early as you can.
Privacy and safety
Is what I say kept confidential?
Psychologists have legal and professional duties to keep what you share private. The few exceptions include a serious risk to someone's safety, a court order and a legal requirement to report to protect a child. Jess explains these in the first session. With a Medicare referral, she reports to your referring doctor after each course of sessions, and you can ask what the report will include.
What should I do in a crisis?
Jess and the clinics are not an emergency service, and messages may not be seen straight away. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 000 or go to the emergency department at your nearest hospital. Lifeline is available day and night on 13 11 14, or by text on 0477 13 11 14. Young people can call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, and the Suicide Call Back Service is on 1300 659 467.
Where Jess sees people
In Rosanna, the clinic offers online booking and early morning and early evening appointments. In Warrandyte, sessions can be held outdoors in the clinic's backyard by the Yarra River. Jess also sees people by telehealth, and appointments can be made with or without a referral.
